ABC NEWS in the US has paid attention to the positive results from the study on colicky infants, performed by Dr Savino in Italy. The study was published in January 2007 in the journal Pediatrics.
This is a prospective, randomised study with the objective to investigate if the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55730 could improve symptoms in colicky infants. 90 breastfed infants, aged 11 to 80 days, and with confirmed infantile colic, were randomly assigned to one of two treatments: Lactobacillus reuteri, 108 CFU/day and administered in an oil suspension, or semithicone, 60 mg/day. 83 infants completed the study. Baseline median daily crying time was 197 minutes in both groups. After 7 days crying time was significantly reduced in the probiotic group, 159 min/day, vs. 177 min/day in the simethicone group (P=0.005). By day 28 the crying time in the L. reuteri group was reduced to 51 min/day vs 145 min/day in the simethicone group (P <0.001). On day 28, 39/41 (95%) were responders in the probiotic group and 3/42 (7%) were responders in the simethicone group. No side effects were observed in either group. Conclusion: The intake of L. reuteri resulted in significantly less crying time within one week of treatment compared to standard therapy in these infants. This effect was even more pronounced at the end of theb 4-week study.

Breast milk samples were collected from 220 women living in urban or rural areas in seven countries worldwide: Denmark, Israel, Japan, Peru, South Africa, South Korea and Sweden.
The colonization frequency varied from 50% in rural areas of Japan and Sweden to absence or low frequencies from urban areas in South Africa, Denmark and Israel. Overall, Lactobacillus reuteri was found in 15% of breast milk samples.
The study was presented by PhD student Gabriela Sinkiewicz, Malmo University, Sweden at the ESPR 2005.
